Before you can take the CAPM® exam, you must apply for and receive approval to take the exam from PMI. The application process is usually completed online. The following are the steps required to apply for an earn CAPM® certification online:
Students have four hours to complete the 150-question CAPM® exam. Fifteen of the 150 questions are ungraded questions placed randomly throughout the exam to evaluate their validity on future tests. The remaining 135 questions are graded and scored. PMI does not publish its passing requirement, but experts recommend students must score at least 60% to pass. Students are only permitted to bring a photo ID and their PMI ID number for the test. Students should not bring coats, medicine, food, drinks, paper, pens, or scrap paper. Applicants are typically provided with a calculator and erasable whiteboard for notes during the CBT exam. The rules for taking the online proctored exam are slightly different from the center-based test (CBT). Students taking the online proctored exam are not permitted to leave their workstation for any reason, and doing so can result in immediate termination of the exam. Students taking a CBT may take breaks as needed, but will still lose time as the clock doesn’t stop for breaks. Each chapter of the PMBOK® represents 4-10% of the exam, with Chapters four, five, six, ten, and thirteen covering most of the exam. The official breakdown of exam questions as listed in the PMI CAPM® handbook is as follows:

The CAPM® exam is a theoretical exam based on foundational knowledge of project management as defined in the PMBOK® guide. The Exam Outline offers 58 learning objectives specifically identified for the CAPM qualification. The following free PMI resources are a great way to explore the exam to get a better idea of what the exam questions are like:
The CAPM handbook is an essential resource for the CAPM® exam. It contains information on how to apply, recertify, and maintain your CAPM® certification. It also contains valuable information about the structure and content of the CAPM® exam. Download a free copy of PMI’s CAPM® Handbook on the PMI website.
NYC Career Centers recommends that all certification applicants become a PMI member before applying for the exam. If you’re a full-time student currently enrolled in a degree-granting program, you can take advantage of PMI’s Student Bundle, which packages PMI membership and the CAPM exam fee. If you’re not a student in a degree program, you can still join PMI and pay the exam fees separately. The CAPM® exam fee is $225 for members and $300 for non-members. Pricing is the same whether you take the online test, CBT, or PBT. The retake fees are $150 for members and $250 for non-members. Applicants for CAPM® re-certification pay the same exam and retake fees as first-time test takers. Certification courses typically do not include exam fees, as PMI requires applicants to apply first with PMI and then the test center. Each student has three opportunities to take the certification test. It’s common for most certification centers to offer a guarantee if you don’t pass by the third attempt, but NYC Career Centers offers a unique guarantee that will cover the $150 member retake fee if you don’t pass the exam on your first attempt. Learn more about our passing guarantee.
Certified project managers must renew their CAPM® certification every five years. To renew the certification, a student must sit the exam again before the end of their five year certification period.
To upgrade from a CAPM® to PMP® certification, you must earn the required amount of experience hours in project management. While CAPM® certification is for new and aspiring project managers, PMP® certification is for experienced project managers currently in a leader or managerial role on the project. To qualify for the PMP® exam, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
